A letter from the Founder

To the person reading this on a phone, in a lift.

In March 2014 I resigned my fellowship at Oxford, left my phone on a train to Crewe, and walked north. I had studied executive stress for eleven years and, in all that time, had not once been calm in a meeting.

I reached Glencoe in the rain. I sat on a rock. After nine days the rock and I reached an understanding, and I have not been the same since. The university has asked me, on several occasions, to return the grant money. I regard these as invitations to speak, and I decline them.

The Enclave is what that rock taught me, refined into a protocol. It will not make your company grow. It will make you stop standing inside it. These are different services, and only one of them is available here.

Dr. Alistair MacFarlane
Founder · Formerly of Oxford

The Protocol

Seven days. Three rites. No negotiation.

The device custody desk.
FIG. 1The Custody Desk. The safe is behind it. We were asked not to photograph the safe.

RITE I

The Fasting of the Inbox

All digital devices are surrendered at the perimeter gate and sealed inside a 19th-century iron safe. The safe has no key. The key is, in a sense, the point.

SAFE: Chubb, 1887 · WEIGHT 412 kg · COMBINATION: unrecorded

The Gate is open. Please have your device ready.

A guest on the rock, headphones plugged into a turnip.
FIG. 2Equipment check, Rite II. The turnip receives the signal. It has not commented.

RITE II

The Auditory Void

Four hours daily, seated on a cold rock facing a misty loch, while binaural alpha waves of ancient bagpipes, played backwards, are administered through unadorned wooden headphones.

ROCK: schist · SURFACE TEMP see strip above · CUSHIONS: none

Do not move. Do not scroll. Do not blink (optional).

A guest holds a one to one with the stag.
FIG. 3The Confessional, one-to-one in progress. The stag has requested no action points.

RITE III

The Boardroom Confessional

At midnight, each guest reads their company’s Q3 P&L statement aloud to a statue of a highland stag. The stag has never once offered feedback. Founders report this as transformative.

STAG: glazed ceramic, sage · FEEDBACK RECEIVED: 0 · DURATION: until finished

The stag is ready. It has always been ready.

The Order of the Day

Identical on all seven days. Deviation is recorded.

Waking

A single bell. Guests do not speak, nor does the bell.

Cold Water Audit

Face, hands, and a candid review of last quarter.

Breakfast (Water)

Served in the Long Room. Porridge is available by written petition.

The Auditory Void

Four hours on the rock. Innes walks the shoreline. Innes does not look at you. Innes knows.

Staring Contest with the Void

One hour. Unscored. The Void has never blinked and is not expected to.

Walking Without Purpose

Any route, provided it does not reach a viewpoint. Viewpoints are considered an outcome.

Supper (Water, Warm)

Eaten in silence. Chewing is audible and will be discussed.

The Boardroom Confessional

Read the P&L. Do not editorialise. The stag has heard it all.

A modest sample of Rite II. Bagpipes are played backwards by a person we cannot name.

The Rules of the Enclave

Twelve rules. Breaches are noted, not discussed.

Guests wear the issued tunic (undyed organic cashmere, one size, sleeves a matter of faith). It has no pockets. You will not miss them. You will miss them.

Phones, laptops, watches and “just a small tablet” are surrendered at the gate. Smart rings count. Smart rings also count as a cry for help.

Valuations may not be mentioned. Anyone who says “our last round” will be taken to see the stag, who will say nothing, at length.

Speech is permitted between 18:30 and 18:45 daily. Permitted topics: weather, soup, regret. Soup is the safest.

No guest may call themselves “founder-led”. The Enclave is rock-led. The rock has not taken a meeting in 400 million years.

Lanyards go in the basket marked “Whatever That Was”. Do not look in the basket. The basket has seen things.

Innes may not be addressed directly. Innes may be acknowledged with a slight nod, at Innes’s discretion. Innes has declined every nod to date.

“Quick sync”, “circle back” and “let’s take this offline” are breaches. So is circling. So is the offline.

Anyone feeling the urge to check email reports to the Bell and stands beside it until it passes. Mean wait: 47 minutes. Longest: a Series B founder, who is still there.

No insight may be written down. Insights are retained quietly, like a minor injury, and mentioned at dinner in the third person.

The stag does not give feedback. Guests who ask for it will be offered water. Guests who ask twice will be offered more water.

Departure is permitted at any time, after one full day of reflection on why. Reflection is not a deliverable. We checked.

Minutes of the Enclave Council

Extracts from the standing record.

The Council meets quarterly, in the dark. Redactions are made by the Council and are not negotiable.

The Council Chamber, empty, with place cards.
PLATE IVThe Council Chamber, between sittings. The tunic on the chair belongs to a guest who is still deliberating.
MINUTE 112 · 04 MARCH 2022PRESENT: Dr. M., Innes (silent), Mrs. Grieve (catering)

Item 1. A guest requested a window with Wi-Fi. The window was provided. The Wi-Fi was explained to him.

Item 2. The Council noted that the porridge petition had reached 14 signatures. The Council noted also that the petition had been drafted in a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet was removed.

RESOLVED: porridge remains by written petition only. Spreadsheets are to be handwritten.
MINUTE 131 · 19 NOVEMBER 2023PRESENT: Dr. M., Innes (silent)

Item 1. A guest from the logistics sector read his Q3 P&L to the stag for fifty-one minutes. The Council regards this as thorough.

Item 2. It was reported that the stag’s left antler had been adjusted by a guest. Innes was asked to comment. Innes did not comment. The silence was minuted as “firm”.

RESOLVED: the antler stays. The guest has been invited to return.
MINUTE 148 · 02 JUNE 2024PRESENT: Dr. M., Innes (silent), the Void

Item 1. A founder asked whether the Enclave would be offering a “digital detox app”. The Council retired for ninety minutes and returned unable to continue.

Item 2. The Void leads the guests 4,112 to nil in formal staring contests. The Council notes this is not a competition and congratulates the Void.

RESOLVED: no app. No app, ever. The matter will not be raised again.
MINUTE 163 · 21 SEPTEMBER 2025PRESENT: Dr. M., Innes (silent)

Item 1. A guest was found to have concealed a phone inside a hollowed copy of Atomic Habits. The phone was placed in the safe. The book was placed in the loch.

Item 2. The guest was asked how he felt. He said “lighter”. The Council deemed this premature.

RESOLVED: lighter is not yet a result. Observe for a further six days.
